Less than 20 min Start To Finish Build of High Performance Building with Cathedral Ceiling, Rigid Fo

So much zip tape. In this video you see start to finish from breaking ground to the finished 900 square foot building built on a slope. I explain start to finish in less than 20 minutes of a high performance garage /studio that is built on a slope. It is heated and cooled. It is ON GRID. Do we need more off-grid youtube videos? I have never built anything from the ground up before. I hired people to do the concrete foundation, electrical, and mini-split install. I did almost everything else myself. I am in Northeast, Pennsylvania, USA in Climate Zone 5a. We do a Frost Protected Shallow Foundation with a 4-ft wall around 3 sides because I am on a mountainside. Its about a 10 degree slope. I rant a little about why you shouldn't do concrete work yourself. I see a lot of youtube videos of people doing this part themself. I don't think you should. You need lots of help and experience. You also need a lot of tools and forms you don't have. I added sill plate bolts into the wet cement. They should be in the concrete at least 7-inches for my area. I tried to explain where to put them but it was impossible so it got edited out. They are typically 6-ft o.c. and you need at least 2 per piece of sill plate. The goal is to put them where there ISN'T framing lumber for the wall going vertical. You don't have time to put them in straight and by the time the concrete dries, they might move anyway. Get a pipe that fits over the bolt and bend them until straight. You won't be able to get your sill plate over crooked bolts. I spend a lot of time creating a thermal break around the build. I added 2-inch rigid foam under the slab and around the 4-ft foundation wall. You GOT to do this, in my opinion. It will immediately pay off with lower energy costs. Also don't use the thin foam like sill gasket. Get an EPDM sill gasket. I list in the video where to get one shipped to you. Framing is the funnest thing a person can do. I love AmazingFramer on youtube. His channel is fun and also a reminder why I don't love framing enough to do it for a profession. Check him out hanging off of overhangs nailing stuff. You can do that bro, I'm good. 2/12 pitch roof is framed on this building. I wanted 4x12s but they are $250 a piece east of Ohio. You might be able to get them for less if you are west of Pennsylvania or in Canada. I end up getting 2x12x20-ft LVLs from Home Depot for $86 each. I found a good deal for a used billboard on ebay. I do a unique design for 9-inches roof insulation and how its framed. Is there a better way to frame it? I have a detailed video about this you should check out. I do an open applied overhang. I read an article in Fine Home Building where these guys did an open overhang. Mine didn't come out as nice as their's. I do 2 layers of 3/4-inch rigid foam on the exterior walls. More zip tape. Please don't build a new house and just add luffy insulation in-between the framing with house wrap around it for a WRB. About 30% of your exterior walls are wood. Then you fill the 70% with insulation. Wood is R-1 per inch. So 30% of your new house is R-5.5 probably and the windows and doors are about the same. Add a continuous layer of rigid foam insulation to the outside of your new building. You will spend less on heating and cooling every single month for the rest of your life. It will also be quieter inside and the air quality will be better. Go ahead and add 100-inches of fluffy insulation to your attic. Go ahead! Waste your time! The guy with the HomePerformance channel said to not do a ladder-style applied overhang like this. I did it anyway and he was totally right. The build takes a while and it starts snowing. I have to plow. I unintentionally test Zip System sheathing under 3-ft of snow. I end up trying 3-ply self adhered roll roofing. I spend a lot of time air sealing too. I use PVC trim. Fiber Cement Siding. I veneer concrete outside the foam attached to the 4-ft foundation wall. I install patio doors sideways as windows. I build a catio for our cat to be able to go in and out but not kill all the birds. I paint the building black. I wear a Crass t-shirt. I detail some of the tools and fasteners I used in this video.
