Derek Chauvin placed on suicide watch as he awaits sentencing in maximum security prison

Derek Chauvin will be placed on suicide watch as he awaits his sentencing in a maximum-security prison. The former police officer was found guilty of second-degree murder on Tuesday after a high profile trial in relation to the death of George Floyd. Chauvin faces up to 75 years in prison after being convicted on all counts, including third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter. He will be sentenced in eight weeks time according to the judge in the case Peter Cahill. The jury deliberated for around 10 and half hours before coming up with their verdict after sitting through a three-week trial. Chauvin’s bail was immediately revoked after the verdict was given and he was escorted to Oak Park Heights prison, which is the only level five high-security prison in Minnesota. The facility has a reputation as being amongst the safest for high-risk inmates, with just one death being reported inside the prison since its opening in 1982. Due to Mr Chauvin being a former police officer and the high profile nature of his case, he will be closely monitored for his own safety according to newspaper reports. The death of George Floyd last year sparked international outcry, protests and riots. The conviction of Derek Chauvin has been celebrated by many, including US President Joe Biden.
