How do we react when confronted with racism? With candor and insight, Dr. Lelia DeAndrade examines why skepticism is a common reaction, and explores the damage done as a consequence. This perceptive talk encourages us to stop looking at racism as an elsewhere concept and instead focus on daily, interpersonal interactions as opportunities to witness, listen, and change. Lelia L. DeAndrade is the Senior Director of Grantmaking Services at the Maine Community Foundation. She holds PhD in Sociology from Syracuse University and held a post-doctoral fellowship at Harvard. Before joining the staff of the Maine Community Foundation, Dr. DeAndrade was the Associate Director of the Center for the Prevention of Hate Violence, where she designed and delivered anti-bias programs for angry kids and misbehaving adults in a variety of settings. She moved to Maine in 1994 to teach on the faculty at Bowdoin College. She lives in Portland, with her husband, a middle school special education teacher and a teenaged son. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
