Exploring the Boardwalk Trail at Big Bog State Recreation Area in Northern Minnesota

Exploring is what we do! When I found out there was a mile long boardwalk out into the largest bog in the lower 48 states, I had to go! Big Bog State Recreation Area in Waskish Minnesota is near Red Lake and is an amazing natural site. Part of a bog ecosystem that stretches 70 miles east to west and 30 miles north to south, Big Bog State Recreation Area is home to moose, elk, wolves and more! Though we didn't see any on our trip, just taking the mile long boardwalk trail out into the bog was an amazing experience. The boardwalk is ADA compliant and a great way to get those with mobility issues out into nature! The Minnesota DNR has done a great job giving people access to a sensitive area with great signage to help folks learn about what they are seeing. The only down side was going in July when the black flies were biting! But we enjoyed ourselves none the less.
