Worcester Symphony Orchestra March 11th, 2023, Mechanics Hall, Worcester Massachusetts The Frankfurter Zeitung publishes correspondence between Johannes Brahms and Clara Schumann, the copyright held by Breitkopf Hartel of Leipzig, which throws significant light on the relations of these artists. This correspondence had been withheld by the Schumann family. Exactly what happened between the two will never be known, but what is known is that their relationship went well beyond infatuation. He had a confidence and trust in her that he had never found in anyone else. In a letter to a friend in June 1854, Brahms writes: "I often have to restrain myself from simply putting my arm quietly around her, and even - I don't know, it seems so natural to me that she could not be misunderstood. I don't think I can love an unmarried girl anymore - at least, I've forgotten all about it. But you promise heaven while Clara revealed it to us." It was probably 1868 when Brahms finally realized what would become the final structure of his First Symphony. In September of that year, he sent a card to his lifelong friend Clara Schumann sketching the Alphorn tune which would emerge in the symphony's Finale, along with the famous message "Thus blew the shepherd's horn today!" Despite the evidence of the work's development, the symphony would not premiere for eight more years in 1876. "High on the hill, deep in the dale, I send you a thousand greetings!"
