Meerkats are a type of mongoose measuring up to 12 inches in length and weighing less than two and a half pounds.They are carnivorous and eat a variety of prey species, such as small reptiles, grubs, scorpions and beetles. They share their range with equally tenacious ground squirrels. These neighbors have much in common, not least their key survival tactic. While they look out for each other on the surface, their secret to success is going underground. Here both species are insulated from the elements and can escape hungry predators.
