Riot police fire tear gas in street clashes with university students

(20 May 2014) Students from Nairobi University were involved in street battles with riot police on Tuesday, after coming out in protest at rising fees. Teargas filled the university compound as students hurled stones towards police before taking cover. University students had carried out demonstrations in downtown Nairobi over a proposed increase in student fees, but the demonstrations turned confrontational after police began firing tear gas. The University of Nairobi sits just across the street from the downtown business district, and many downtown businesses were closed and downtown streets were empty of cars. An Associated Press photographer documenting the confrontations said that police later chased students inside university classrooms and fired tear gas into those classrooms with students inside. Police were later filmed escorting dozens of students out of the university compound and into trucks.
