This video contains a dense presentation regarding all the data that we have to date on the use of the Elevation Training Mask for the purpose of increasing performance. In this video, you’ll find all the research that has been done on these training masks (9 studies) and a full discussion on the actual purpose of this device. In this description, I’m going also to break down the terminologies that some people might not be familiar with. Elevation Training Mask 2.0 The Elevation Training Mask 2.0 was the first hands-free Respiratory Muscle Trainer (RMT) to introduce in the market. It was initially marketed as a simulator of high altitude training, thus many people believed at the time that they can simulate high altitude training with this mask. The Elevation Training Mask 2.0 has been used extensively by athletes in various sports with nothing more supporting its use than the ‘’idea’’ that it would be helpful. Elevation Training Mask 3.0 The Elevation Training Mask 3.0 was the updated version of the Elevation Training Mask 2.0. In reality, there are no important (useful) differences between the although the company withdrew the slogan ‘’simulates high altitude’’ due to the lack of scientific data supporting this idea. The Elevation Training Mask 3.0 was again heavily supported and advertised by many fitness influencers with absolutely no scientific data to support its efficiency as a training device. For most people the fact that is making every workout harder seems to be enough proof for applying it to their training session. Training mask science In the past 5 years, there have been 9 studies on the effects of elevation training mask on performance. In this video you will find a short presentation of most of them and below in this description, you can find the links of all of them. These studies examined the effects of the elevation training mask in performance, hematological profile, short term recovery, respiratory muscle strength, breathing discomfort, and psychophysiological alterations. Does elevation training mask work? To understand if the training masks work we first need to understand what we mean by the word ‘’work’’. In general, we mainly search for increases in performance that may occur by simulating high altitude, increasing aerobic capacity, increasing respiratory muscle strength, or improving short term recovery (that has been proposed as an advantage of these masks). So does training mask simulate high altitude? The quick answer is no! You can find a full presentation regarding the effects of these training masks on hematological parameters associated with high altitude adaptations in my first video on Elevation Training Masks. In this video you’ll only find a sort mention in this topic. Porcari and coworkers in 20016 (find the link below) were the first to investigate the relationship of this mask with high altitude and found absolutely no effect on the hematological profile of the athletes.
