(1 Apr 1997) Natural Sound Two bombs have exploded near Jewish settlements in the Gaza Strip, killing the two Palestinian suicide attackers and wounding several other Arabs. Israel radio speculated that the suicide bombers had apparently co-ordinated and timed their attacks to coincide with the normal travel schedule of school buses from Jewish settlements. The blasts come at a time of rising tensions in the Middle East following an Israeli decision to build a large Jewish settlement in disputed east Jerusalem. A Palestinian police commander said the first suicide bomb attack was about 1.5 kilometres (one mile) from the Jewish settlement of Nezarim. This blast was first thought to have exploded next to a school bus leaving Nezarim, but a Jewish settler leader said the bus had been delayed and was not near the explosion. Israeli soldiers and Palestinian police arrived at the scene and co-ordinated the aftermath. Police showed the remains of the suicide bomber's body. Police said that a second blast near the Kfar Darom settlement occurred when a cart loaded with explosives went off near an Israeli bus. A police statement said there were no Israeli casualties but several Palestinians were wounded. The explosions were the first attacks since a March 21 suicide bombing killed three Israeli women at a Tel Aviv cafe. Tensions have been high since Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu allowed bulldozers to start clearing ground for a new Jewish neighbourhood in disputed east Jerusalem. The construction touched off 11 days of Palestinian riots that left one Palestinian youth dead.
