Tens of houses and cars were burnt in a wildfire that ripped through the forest near the centre of Turkey's northwestern Canakkale province on Monday. Temperatures in the region reached 33 degrees Celsius with a wind speed of up to 66 kilometres per hour. Nearly 700 firefighters were battling the blaze in Trancoso, Portgual, on Monday amid strong winds and high temperatures. The wildfire started on Saturday, in a village some 350km northeast of Lisbon. Spanish fire brigades, forestry agencies and police worked through Monday night to contain a wildfire in the municipality of Tres Cantos, located 23 kilometers (14.29 miles) north of Madrid. A prolonged heatwave in Spain continued on Tuesday, with temperatures set to reach 44C. Scientists say the Mediterranean region's hotter, drier summers put it at a high risk of wildfires.
