Join me on my month long experiment to compare the energy consumption of a budget winter tire versus a premium winter tire Nokian Hakkapeliitta R5 EV. Nokian claims that the EV specific model is designed to have reduced rolling resistance compared to non-EV winter tires. Does it actually help reduce energy consumption during winter months? I've spent several weeks collecting data and benchmarking a set of Falken EuroWinter (two winters old, about 10,000 miles wear) and comparing energy consumption to my new Hakkapeliitta R5 EVs. I could not compare consumption on the same days because I have only one car, but I tried my best to select days with most similar temperature and wind speed conditions. The route is a 54km (34mi) highway loop north of Toronto, driven at 120 kmh (74mph) on cruise control in a Tesla Model Y dual motor. I set cold tire pressures to 40 psi, used a consistent manual hvac setting, and made sure the battery started out consistently cold every time. As you can see from my results, I observed about a 5-6% improvement versus my old non-EV-optimized winter tires. This could represent significant savings in energy costs over the life time of the tire, especially for drivers who rely on DC fast charging where energy costs are several times more expensive than charging at home. 0:00 Intro 1:50 Testing Conditions 3:31 Testing Results Join our weekly EV newsletter https://www.evchargerreviews.net/watt...
