Every year 8 million people worldwide pass away because of cancer. Professor Damya Laoui is developing a vaccine, which should protect people against their own cancer and metastases. By using the correct cells of the immune system, she is able to develop personalized vaccine. In this way, the immune system is used to prevent relapse or metastases. In addition to saving lives, this therapy would mean fewer side effects compared to current approaches. In 2017 Professor Laoui was called one of the Innovators under 35 Europe by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. One year later she was awarded ‘Wetenschapstalent 2018’ by New Scientist for her work on the vaccine. In her presentation professor Laoui will take us on her different paths as a successful female scientist.
