"Tugane Ishuri" volunteers in action | UNICEF Rwanda

UNICEF launched the "Tugane Ishuri" volunteer initiative in Rwanda in January 2019. In partnership with YWCA, 160 young volunteers between the ages of 18 and 25 were trained to identify children in their own communities who had dropped out of school, and to counsel the children and their families to help the children re-enroll. Since the beginning of the initiative, these volunteers have helped over 1,200 children in Rwanda's Ngororero District to return to school. Some of these dropout children were living on the street, but have risen to become some of the top performers in their classes.
