I’m staying with my friend Greg and his girlfriend Aeh here in Thailand and she made me homemade Som Tam which is an extremely popular dish. It’s a salad made from green unripened papaya with Thai chllies, garlic, tomato, fish sauce, palm sugar and lime and msg. Because I am a farang (foreigner) she only put two peppers in instead of the 5 she normally does. Be careful with Thai peppers. They are little but pack a punch. I’ve never looked for unripe papaya before so it may be difficult to source outside of an Asian store. I said in the video that it tastes like cabbage and that’s not really right. It’s dense like cabbage when you bite it but it has a very neutral flavor. So I think I was feeling the texture of cabbage more than the flavor. But no sweetness like a ripe papaya and no sour like some unripe fruits. As I look through recipes online I see various other ingredients like dried shrimp and peanuts could also be added. But this is Aeh’s recipe and as far as I am concerned it was perfect. Interestingly my friend Greg does not like this dish, which tells me he’s crazy, because it’s delicious. It was really good. Very spicy, but really good. #chiangmai #thailand #somtam
