In October 2024, the SMTD OperaLab and the University Philharmonia Orchestra presented the first orchestral workshop of The House on Mango Street, a new opera composed by alumnus Derek Bermel (MM ’93, DMA ’97, composition and clarinet) with a libretto by Sandra Cisneros, author of the beloved book of the same name. In this video, Jayce Ogren – assistant professor of music, associate director of orchestras, and co-director of SMTD OperaLab – and Chía Patiño, assistant professor in the Department of Voice & Opera, along with Bermel and Cisneros, discuss the workshop process and its benefits to the creators as well as the students involved. Students Danielle Casós (SM ’25, voice; recipient of the SMTD Graduate Scholarship) and Renata Rangel (BM ’25, percussion; recipient of a scholarship from the Julian and Vera McIntosh Memorial Fund – Music) discuss the enormous value of working directly with the creators of new works. In every kind of SMTD production, from workshops of new pieces to fully staged theatrical performances, students gain invaluable hands-on experience, honing their craft and graduating well-prepared to step into their professional lives.
