What started as frustration… quickly turned into one of the most personal rivalries heading into WWE Backlash. Sami Speaks His Mind Following a difficult stretch for Cody Rhodes, tensions on Raw were already high. Cody had recently lost the WWE Championship to Drew McIntyre, and management announced that there would be no automatic rematch. Cody would have to earn his way back. Things only got worse for Cody after he failed to win the Royal Rumble. However, Cody managed to qualify for the Elimination Chamber by defeating Sami Zayn in a qualifying match. After Cody later lost inside the Chamber, controversy erupted when WWE officials still granted him another championship opportunity. That’s when Sami Zayn finally snapped. The following week, Sami marched to the ring and called Cody out in front of the entire WWE Universe. When Cody arrived, Sami didn’t hold back. “After you lost the WWE Championship to Drew, it was announced that there was gonna be no rematch. You had to earn it.” Sami paced the ring, growing more intense. “You lost the Royal Rumble match. Then you qualified for the Elimination Chamber match by pinning me, which I’m not mad about.” The crowd murmured as Sami continued. “Then you lost the Chamber match… and yet you still get a championship match.” Sami stepped closer. “Just because you're the son of the American Dream doesn’t mean this place should show you favoritism.” The arena grew tense as Cody slowly lifted the microphone. Cody Fires Back Cody looked at Sami for a long moment before responding. “You think this was handed to me?” The crowd reacted as Cody shook his head. “My entire career has been about fighting for opportunities that people said I didn’t deserve.” Cody stepped closer. “Yeah, my father was Dusty Rhodes. And I’m proud of that. But every scar I’ve earned in this ring… every match I’ve fought… that was me.” The tension escalated as Cody pointed directly at Sami. “If you’ve got a problem with my opportunities… then fight me and take one.” Sami smirked but didn’t answer. Not yet. The Attack The following week, Cody competed in a highly anticipated rematch against Randy Orton. The match was competitive and intense, with both men pushing each other to their limits. But just as Cody began building momentum… Sami Zayn stormed the ring. The referee tried to stop him, but Sami viciously attacked Cody, throwing him into the ring post and leaving him laid out in the center of the ring. The referee had no choice but to award the match to Randy Orton. Sami stood over Cody as the crowd erupted in boos. Then he simply walked away. The Confrontation The next week on Raw, Cody demanded Sami come to the ring and explain himself. Sami didn’t hesitate. Standing face-to-face once again, Sami spoke first. “You wanted to know why I did it?” He pointed at Cody. “Because I’m tired of watching you fail upward while guys like me fight for scraps.” Cody shook his head. “You didn’t attack me because of fairness, Sami.” He stepped closer. “You attacked me because deep down you know something…” The crowd leaned in. “You know you can’t beat me when it actually counts.” That comment sent Sami over the edge. Sami shoved Cody. Cody shoved him back. And suddenly the arena erupted into absolute chaos. The Brawl The two began throwing punches wildly. Officials rushed the ring as Sami tackled Cody into the corner. Cody responded by launching Sami over the top rope before diving out of the ring after him. The fight spilled into the crowd. Steel chairs were thrown. Barricades were toppled. Security struggled to separate the two men as the arena chanted loudly. It took nearly the entire locker room to break them apart. The Match is Made After the chaotic fight, WWE management realized a normal match wouldn’t be enough to contain the hatred between them. So the match was made official. At Backlash: Cody Rhodes vs Sami Zayn Last Man Standing. No pinfalls. No submissions. The only way to win is to beat your opponent so badly that they cannot answer a ten count. For Sami Zayn, it’s about proving that Cody Rhodes isn’t the golden boy WWE treats him as. For Cody Rhodes, it’s about proving that everything he has earned… was fought for. At Backlash, only one man will be left standing.
