#SCOSoundbites - Postcards from Macao Concert: For Our Dreams: Wang Chenwei's Composition Showcase Date: 10 June 2023 Composed by Wang Chenwei Postcards capture symbolic images of a place. On the back, tourists share personal experiences with acquaintances worldwide. Similarly, the composer cites musical motifs symbolic of Macao to paint a unique musical portrait of its culture and history. The first movement, “A-Ma Temple”, narrates the story behind Macao’s most renowned temple, whose native name, “a-maa-gok”, gave rise to the city’s name. “I. Melody of the Waves” evokes Macao’s picturesque coast, featuring figurations from the Cantonese tune “Autumn Moon over the Calm Lake”. “II. Hurricane at Sea” depicts a Hokkien ship caught in a hurricane near Macao, drawing motifs from the Hokkien folk song “Darkening Sky”. “III. Miracle of A-Ma” uses Guzheng glissandi to symbolise the tutelary deity of seafarers appearing on Barra Hill, guiding the ship to safety. “IV. Worship of A-Ma” intertwines the motifs from “Autumn Moon” and “Darkening Sky” in counterpoint, representing the grateful Hokkien seafarers establishing a temple to their saviour. The second movement, “Mount Fortress”, narrates the 1622 Battle of Macao, drawing on motifs from late Renaissance organ works by a Dutch and a Portuguese composer. “I. Invasion of the Dutch “builds on motifs from the “Fantasia Cromatica and Toccata in A minor” by Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck, reflecting Dutch ambitions to capture Macao for trade dominance in East Asia. “II. Defenders of Macao” portrays locals from all walks of life uniting against the invaders, as Macao lacked a garrison army. The theme derives from Manuel Rodrigues Coelho’s “Primeiro Tento do Primeiro Tom (First Tento of the First Tone)”, an organ composition in the tento style unique to the Iberian Renaissance. “III. Battle of Macao” depicts the clash through the contrapuntal juxtaposition of the “Toccata” and “Tento” motifs. “IV. Repulsion of the Invaders” pits the “Tento” against the descending semitone motif of the “Fantasia Cromatica”, symbolising Macao’s victory over its vastly stronger opponent. The movement closes in celebration with organ-like cadenzas by the Sheng group. The third movement, “Senado Square”, evokes the iconic square at the heart of Macao’s cultural and political life since its founding. “I. Introduction” cites a motif from the fado march “Lisboa é Assim (This is Lisbon)”, sung by the Macanese as “Macau sâm Assí (This is Macao)” with new lyrics in Patuá (Macanese creole). This reference embodies the essence of “Postcards from Macao” – to musically convey the spirit of “this is Macao”. “II. Saudade” cites the opening motif from “Macau Terra Minha (Macao My Land)”, a 1970 Portuguese song by the Macanese songwriter Rigoberto Rosário Jr. Saudade, a quintessential emotion in Portuguese culture, conveys profound nostalgia or longing. The Liuqin and Pipa accompany in the style of the Portuguese guitar. “III. Transition” imitates traditional Portuguese fado, with a melody that accelerates and brightens, like a film shifting from monochrome to colour. “IV. Fusion” is a fado march incorporating motifs from “Thunder in Drought” and “Autumn Moon over the Calm Lake”. This hybrid of Portuguese and Cantonese music encapsulates Macao’s cultural confluence and culminates in a grand finale. This composition was commissioned by the Cultural Affairs Bureau of the Macao S.A.R. Government and premiered by the Macao Chinese Orchestra in 2019, the 20th anniversary of Macao’s return to China. View the house programme of “For Our Dreams: Wang Chenwei's Composition Showcase” at https://bit.ly/4fJYyvz #SCO音乐摘录 - 《澳门明信片》 音乐会:逐梦:王辰威作品专场音乐会 日期:2023年6月10日 王辰威作曲 明信片以标志性的图像承载某个地域的风土人情,背面书写旅游者的个人体验,寄送给世界各地的亲朋好友。乐曲以澳门三个著名地标命名三个乐章,将多个具有象征意义的音乐动机发展成一首 16 分钟的原创曲,体现澳门独特的历史和文化 —— 这就是澳门。 第一乐章《妈阁庙》陈述妈阁庙的传说。 一、「海浪之韵」展示了澳门海岸壮丽的自然风光,取材于广东乐曲《平湖秋月》。 二、「船遇飓风」描述一艘福建船在澳门海域遭遇飓风,取材于福建童谣《天乌乌》。 三、「妈祖护佑」以一串古筝刮奏象征“护航海神”妈祖显灵,引导船员穿越惊涛安全靠岸。 四、「敬奉妈祖」以对位技法结合了《平湖秋月》和《天乌乌》,表述福建人为了感恩,在澳门建立了妈阁庙。葡文 “Macau” 就源自“妈阁”。 第二乐章《大炮台》叙述了 1622 年的葡荷澳门之战,取材于同个时期(即文艺复兴晚期)葡荷两位作曲家的管风琴曲。 一、「荷军入侵」取材于 Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck 的《半音幻想曲》及《A小调托卡塔》,荷兰海军誓要攻下澳门,巩固其东亚海上贸易通道。 二、「守卫澳门」取材于 Manuel Rodrigues Coelho 的《第一音第一 Tento》,讲述澳门人在缺乏守军的弱势下,众志成城抵抗侵略者。(Tento 是葡萄牙和西班牙文艺复兴时期独有的管风琴曲式。) 三、「葡荷交战」对位性地结合了《托卡塔》及《Tento》的音乐动机,营造出两军交战的激烈场面。 四、「击退众敌」引用《半音幻想曲》的下行半音阶描绘荷军败退的场景,同时《Tento》凯旋的鸣声表现澳门人以少胜多。随后笙组吹出管风琴般的华彩,乐章在欢庆的气氛中结束。 第三乐章《议事亭前地》取材于澳门开埠四百年以来的社会及文化中心。 一、「引子」引用法多进行曲《这就是里斯本》(土生葡人翻唱为《这就是澳门》)表达《澳门明信片》的核心思想——这就是澳门。 二、「怀旧」引用土生葡人歌手 Rigoberto Rosário Jr. 1970 年的葡语歌《澳门,我的土》的开头动机,传达葡人文化中的 saudade 情感。(Saudade 常被评为一个无法翻译的词,包含了怀念、怀旧、思乡、向往等意义。)柳琴和琵琶以葡萄牙吉他的风格加以伴奏。 三、「变迁」模仿葡萄牙传统法多音乐(fado)风格。乐曲逐渐加快变明亮,仿佛旧的黑白影片转变成彩色。 四、「融合」将广东乐曲《旱天雷》和《平湖秋月》的素材改写成一首欢快的法多进行曲,达到中葡音乐风格“混血”性的融合(即乐曲同时具有广东和葡萄牙特征),并推向高潮的尾声。 本创作作品由澳门特别行政区政府文化局委约创作,并由澳门中乐团首演于 2019 年(澳门回归 20 周年)。 点击链接参阅“逐梦:王辰威作品专场音乐会”节目册: https://bit.ly/4fJYyvz
