This channel vlogs my personal learning experience of designing a small blue water exploration sailboat from scratch. I'm not a professional naval architect—just someone passionate about the ocean. If you want a deeper explination about certain topics, feel free to ask and I can explain further. I'm happy to hear feedback as well. Trapped in a Design Spiral: Balancing Performance, Stability, and Simplicity. In this episode, I’m caught in a negative feedback loop where every improvement seemed to make something else worse. As I increased sail area for better performance, I had to boost stability with more ballast and deeper draft. But that meant heavier masts, more structural stress, and ultimately, a heavier and slower boat. This iterative cycle, lead me to rethink my approach. I compared a three-masted schooner with a two-masted ketch: the masts are scaled to RM, not sail area. A two-masted boat is therefore a better alternative; less complexity and same performance. Keel configurations and rudder mechanics, there is a lot of trade-offs; balancing performance, structural integrity, simplicity, cost, and accessibility. Sometimes, the best way forward is to stop optimizing one variable and start thinking about the big picture.
