Just after 7 pm Monday, the driver of a Chevrolet 3500 had just left Home Depot after renting a backhoe. He and his three children were traveling north on Loop 494 just north of SH 99. It was then that a southbound Nissan Kix crossed the center line. The pickup driver tried to avoid a crash, but slammed into the Nissan, causing the left front wheel of the pickup to be ripped off. This caused the pickup to lose control and crash into the ditch, jacknifing the trailer with the backhoe. The driver and his three children were transported to HCA Kingwood in stable condition. The driver of the Kix, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was pronounced deceased on the scene. Loop 494 was closed until midnight as DPS investigated the crash. The 33-year-old deceased driver was transported to the Montgomery County Forensic Center by Eickenhorst Funeral Directors for autopsy. Porter fire had to assist in freeing the trailer from the truck. The safety chains were under enormous tension and had to be released to move the truck and backhoe.
