These Costa Rican musicians and lifelong friends play their own concert arrangements of instrumental masterpieces in a virtuosic way. It was founded in 2020 and its name is derived from the initials of their surnames —Castro & Robles— and their native country —Costa Rica—. On the historical date of the centennial —11th March 2021— of Ástor Piazzolla’s birth, CRduo is very excited to officially announce its first recording project “Piazzolla Centenario'' as a homage to unquestionably one of the greatest geniuses of Argentinian tango. This album will include 10 new original concert arrangements by Carlos Alberto Castro, with the close collaboration of André Robles Field in the violin edition. Because of his unique talent of blending tango with classical music and jazz, Piazzolla found his own distinctive musical voice and started a huge revolution that is very well represented in “Libertango”. The title of this famous masterpiece is a combination of “libertad” (freedom) and tango, expressing the innovations and the creative emancipation sought by Piazzolla that triggered the anger of the traditionalists and the Guardia Vieja (tango’s old school) those times, who called him “el asesino del tango” (the tango murderer). There are two kinds of tango: before Piazzolla and after Piazzolla. Piazzolla composed “Libertango” in 1974 in Italy as his presentation card to the European public without guessing that this would become his worldwide most famous tango. This is a moto perpetuo characterized by its unstoppable tango beat with a strong rhythmic character, which develops sequentially like a Baroque chaconne (ciaccona). In this piece, the insistent repetition of the accompaniment motif acquires a thematic importance and alternates with or even complements the contrasting melody, which is rather meditative and one of the most beautiful lines that Ástor ever wrote. As composer and bandoneon player, Ástor Piazzolla is one of the most influential musical figures of the 20th century and even after the world lost him in 1992, Ástor Piazzolla continues to fascinate with his deep emotional music and his power to give us all goosebumps.
