One day exploring the spectacular Mavrovo National Park in North Macedonia. Starting at my hotel in Janche we’ll visit an Ottoman stone bridge & the magnificent Bigorski Monastery. 🇲🇰 See more travel vlogs from NORTH MACEDONIA → https://bit.ly/mwt_northmacedonia I was really excited to arrive at the southern entrance of Mavrovo National Park - an incredible area of forested mountains, valleys and historical places in the western region of North Macedonia. Although the scenery was stunning I was blown away by how few tourists there were. For the most part it felt like I was the only one visiting. This part of Mavrovo National Park is about two hours by car from either Ohrid or Skopje although you might need to leave a little more time as the roads can be a little slower than anticipated. My day started in the village of Janche high up in the mountains. I stayed at the Hotel TUTTO which felt a bit like a deserted ski lodge. My balcony overlooked the rest of the village & had some mesmerising views of the green mountains above. It was a fabulous view to wake up to. I give you a tour of my room and then we’ll hit the road. My first stop is an old Ottoman-era stone bridge dating back several centuries. It goes by the name Most Elenski Skok which translates to English as ‘Deer Leap Bridge’. There’s definitely a story behind that one! It’s one of those places that if you didn’t know was there you’d drive straight past it! The bridge crosses a fast flowing river and is an alternative starting place for several signed hiking trails. Back on the road I followed a raging river that miraculously created the tall canyon and spectacular landscape around me. The road took me up the mountainside to an old Byzantine era monastery called Bigorski Monastery St John the Baptist. The views from this place were insane and I enjoyed visiting the religious buildings and seeing so many timeless wall paintings and pieces of art. It was like travelling back in time! I continued to enjoy the drive onwards and couldn’t help but to stop multiple times to take photographs and videos of the many magical places I passed through. Unfortunately the weather took a turn for the worse and I decided to press on towards Mavrovo. On route I couldn’t help but to stop in the village of Trnica where I spotted a roadside Yugoslav monument honouring the fight for liberation during the Second World War. As far as memorials go, they don’t make them like that anymore! More coming from Mavrovo National Park so stay tuned.
