Tichina discusses her upbringing, and how she started in New York and landed in California. She gives us intimate details about the impact her family had on her career. As the conversation deepens, Tichina and Antwan discuss her time on daytime television, guest starring roles and how she landed the role of Pam on Fox’s hit sitcom, “Martin.” Tichina discusses the loss of her dad, other family members and her cast member/friend from “Martin,” Thomas Mikal Ford and how she’s navigated through grief. Tichina shares the advice she received from the late Whitney Houston and Frankie Beverly and the impact it had on her life. She also discusses the difference between being a comedian and a comedic actress. We dive into what she’s learned from great comedians such as Martin Lawrence and Cedric The Entertainer. The conversation is intriguing as Tichina and Antwan discuss fame and how it affects not only her, but those around her. Tichina gets candid about accountability and why we as people need to take a closer look at ourselves and what we contribute directly and indirectly to every situation we’re involved in. Her decades long friendship with fellow actress Tisha Campbell is very meaningful to her and she explains why their friendship has stood the test of time. Up close and personal, Tichina is open and honest about love, divorce, plastic surgery and beauty standards in Hollywood. She goes into further detail as it pertains to a healthy diet. Tichina is an advocate for those suffering from Lupus and other autoimmune diseases. She’s raising awareness through the We Win Foundation, which was founded by Tichina and her sister Zenay who is affected by Lupus. Tichina explains how seeing her sister Zenay fight through the illness gave her a new respect for life. Motherhood is by far the most important role in Tichina’s life. She explains how motherhood shaped her, how it’s changed her perspective, and how becoming a mother helped her play the various characters she’s played throughout her career. And that’s not all, Tichina has added a new and exciting milestone to her resume. She’s a director. Tichina is the first African American woman to direct a multi-camera episode for a major network. But with this comes challenges. Tichina addresses the systemic issues that Black talent is faced with in entertainment, and while things have gotten better, there’s still a ways to go. Tichina inspires us through her character and integrity. She encourages us to share knowledge with one another so that we can all grow and evolve. Throughout her journey in entertainment, highs and lows, ups and downs, Tichina has prevailed.
