Once home to over 400 desert fortresses, the region is scattered with ancient ruins that look like giant sandcastles — some dating back more than 2,000 years. These mysterious structures are a surreal reminder of the Silk Road’s vast history. We visit several of the most famous fortresses: Toprak Kala, Kizil Kala, Ayaz Kala & Chilpik Kala.
