Watch how events unfolded following the end of a 16 hour siege in which a gunman held dozens of people hostage in a cafe in central Sydney. The Sydney cafe siege has ended, with three people dead, including gunman Man Haron Monis, after armed police stormed the building amid the sound of chaotic gunfire. Earlier in the day five people had managed to escaped the cafe in Martin Place, a plaza in the heart of the city's financial and shopping district which was packed with holiday shoppers this time of year. Later a police operation was launched as five more hostages fled the cafe, more than 16 hours after the siege began. Armed police and medics entered the building soon afterwards and five people were seen being taken away on stretchers. New South Wales Police confirmed developments in a tweet: "Sydney siege is over." Later at a press conference police confirmed that the gunman and a male and female hostage had been killed in the shoot-out. Police urged Sydneysiders not to "lose confidence in the city", saying the attack had been an "isolated incident" carried out by an individual. "This should never destroy, or change the way of our life," said Andrew Scipione, the head of New South Wales police.
