For the first time ever, my mom and sister travelled all the way from Alberta to Newfoundland to see the remote island we call home. We start the morning on the island with coffee before loading up the speed boat and heading back to the mainland. After two months with us, it was time to bring Adam to the airport in St. John’s and say our goodbyes. Later that night, I make the quiet drive back to the terminal one more time before returning to the hotel where Kelly and I are staying with the dogs. The next day we gather supplies around town — picking up a new heavy-duty propane on-demand hot water system for the house and some outdoor gear we plan to give away during one of our weekly live streams. The following morning in Baine Harbour, after running out of daylight the day before, we finally get Mom and Sis suited up in their boat gear and make the run across the water to the island. Their very first boat ride home. We give them the full tour of our off-grid house renovation, the land, and the work we’ve been pouring ourselves into. And of course, Mom carried homemade carrot cake across the country in her lap just so we could all sit down together and share it here. With Kelly pregnant and feeling like our mattress on the floor just isn’t cutting it anymore, I build a simple but sturdy bed frame to lift things up and make our bedroom a little more comfortable. Later in the week during our town hall live stream, we’re able to give away some of the outdoor gear we picked up in St. John’s to a deserving grandmother from our Skote community — something that means a lot to us. Thanks for following along as we share our off grid life in Newfoundland, our island home, and the people who make it all worthwhile. We love you ❤️
