Pride and Prejudice: The truth about Thomas Mann's ballet master, Rudolph Knoll Wednesday December 16th 2020 Speakers: Birte Hoffmann-Cabenda & Dr Eva Zöllner Description Ballet master Francois Knaak is one of Thomas Mann's most inspiring fictional characters, appearing in his novellas 'Tonio Kröger' (1903) and 'Wie Jappe und Do Escobar sich prügelten' (1911; The Fight between Jappe and Do Escobar). While it is a well-known fact that Knaak had a real-life alter ego in Rudolph Knoll (1862-1916), Thomas Mann's own dance teacher in Lübeck and ballet master at Hamburg's Deutsches Schauspielhaus, so far Knoll himself remained a complete enigma. In this lecture, the speakers present new facts and documents about Rudolph Knoll's fascinating life and career, compiled in years of research. Speakers: Birte Hoffmann-Cabenda: Birte discovered her love for early dance in the mid-70s while still ast school. She has been a member of the (Dolmetsch) Historical Dance Society since 1979, holding a teaching certificate of this organisation, and has decades of experience in researching and teaching dances of various eras. Birte runs her own historical dance group, 'Rossina', and - in non-Corona times - regularly offers workshops and calls period balls. Dr Eva Zöllner studied musicology and English literature at the University of Hamburg, completing her doctorate in 1998. She is active as an author, lecturer, editor and translator, lecturing in Germany as well as in the UK.
