In this video, I have explained computer software. I went ahead to talk about how software are produced and forms through which software developers make their software available to end-users. I discussed also, the differences between open-source and closed source as well as freeware and shareware. COMPUTER SOFTWARE Computer software or software is a step-by-step instruction written by a computer programmer or a software developer that tells the computer what to do and how to do it. Software and program are used interchangeably. Examples include: WhatsApp, Facebook, Twitter, Mozilla Firefox, Google chrome, Mavis Beacon, etc. FORMS THROUGH WHICH SOFTWARE DEVELOPERS MAKE THEIR SOFTWARE AVAILABLE TO END-USERS 1. Open-source: Open-source software is a software that is released under a license which the copyright holder grants users the right to use, study, change, and distribute the software and its source code to anyone and for any purpose. Some examples include, Mozilla Firefox, VLC media player, Linux, Android, etc. 2. Closed-source or proprietary: Proprietary or closed-source is a software which the copyright holder reserves the right to use, modify or share the software. Closed-source software do not make their source codes available. Some examples include, Microsoft Windows, Microsoft office, Adobe reader, WinRAR, etc. 3. Freeware: Freeware is a type of proprietary software that is released without charge to the public or at no monetary cost. 4. Shareware: Shareware is a type of proprietary software which is given out for free with limited functionalities or on trial basis until purchased. DIFFERENCES BETWEEN OPEN-SOURCE AND CLOSED-SOURCE A. OPEN-SOURCE 1. Program source codes are available and can be modified. 2. It is licensed and available for free. 3. Modification can be done by any knowledgeable person with expertise. B. CLOSED-SOURCE 1. Program source codes are not available and cannot be modified. 2. It is licensed and not available for free. 3. Modification can be done only by those who developed the software. DIFFERENCES BETWEEN FREEWARE AND SHAREWARE A. FREEWARE 1. Free to use with no limitations. 2. All features are functional and operational for users to use. B. SHAREWARE 1. Free to use but with limitations. 2. Some features are functional and operational for only paid users. TYPES OF SOFTWARE 1. Application software 2. System software DIFFERENCES BETWEEN APPLICATION AND SYSTEM SOFTWARE A. APPLICATION SOFTWARE 1. They are designed to accomplish general or specific tasks. 2. Programming of application software is comparatively easy. 3. A computer can easily run without application software. 4. Application software depend on system software and cannot run without system software. B. SYSTEM SOFTWARE 1. They are mainly designed for managing system resources. 2.
