Under Ayub Khan and Yahya Khan, Bhutto distinguished himself as his country's ablest politician. For two decades, he held virtually every portfolio in the government - and survived. But in July 1977 he followed in the footsteps of Pakistan's previous leaders, thrown out of office in disgrace. His downfall came during Pakistan's first free elections under civilian rule. Allegations of corruption and even murder followed during a bloodless coup headed by the army Chief of Staff, General Zia.
