Former prime minister of Japan Shinzo Abe was shot twice while giving a speech in Nara on Friday. Local news broadcaster NHK said Abe was “conscious and responsive” while being taken to the hospital. Later in a tweet, ex-Tokyo governor Yoichi Masuzoe said the 67-year-old Abe was in a state of ‘cardiopulmonary arrest’, a term often used before a death is officially declared in Japan. He passed away, later, in a hospital, battling wounds sustained from gunshots. Shinzo Abe will forever be respected and revered in India as the flag-bearer of the fledgling Indo-Japanese relationship; which under the leadership of Japan’s longest-serving prime minister, was elevated to ‘Global and Strategic Partnership’ during the then PM Manmohan Singh’s term and later to ‘Special Strategic and Global Partnership’ when PM Narendra Modi visited the island nation in 2014.
