After unfortunately missing Elephant Island, we continue our course toward the Antarctic Peninsula. Time and again, we are slowed or blocked by dense ice fields and pack ice. Even with almost no wind, the ship rocks noticeably up and down — at times quite strongly. What’s happening here? We are in the extended path of the famous Drake Passage. A storm further out has set the waters in motion, and the movement is carried hundreds of kilometers. This creates the phenomenon of the ship moving sharply up and down, even when no waves are visible. Surprisingly, this does not challenge the stomach much, even though you are lifted several meters. It is an impressive experience. On a ship like this, there is no danger: the sidewalls are high, the vessel is built for such expeditions, and everyone on board feels safe while marveling at this display of nature. Experiencing this shows how powerful — and at the same time mesmerizing — the Antarctic can be, even on seemingly calm waters.
