In 2019 GMC has made life more difficult for those of us who like to expand the array of instruments in the new Sierra Denali. The grab handle which had previously been mounted to the roof above the driver's window is now integrated into the A-Pillar, right where gauge pods are usually added. I'm planning to build a custom A-pillar pod also on this truck, so stick around for that! Yes I like my gauges! But the first pod is going in the center of the dash in place of the storage tray above the radio stack. This tray isn't very useful. Anything small enough to fit into the try gets lost in there since you can't see it. Anything big enough that you can see falls out when you make a turn! It is however a perfect place to add some vehicle customizations. The tray is removable and pretty cheap. Below the tray is a solid floor but there is a spot right in the middle where its possible to drill an access hole for wiring. should the pod be removed in the future this hole will be invisible as the storage tray insert covers it. This project shows my process for creating a fully customized 5 gauge pod using my 3D printer and replacing the center tray with it. The pod itself is off to the right of the driver's view. Being more of a sports car person than a truck person I like to keep my seat at its lowest position, the worst case scenario for any loss of visibility for this pod. Even at this height the pod does not obstruct my view to any significant degree. Half of the obstruction is blocked by the hood anyway. I'm quite a safety freak so if this weren't a safe place to add gauges believe me, I wouldn't do it. My pod includes: Boost, Oil Pressure, Oil Temperature, Coolant Temperature, and Transmission Temperature. Yes some of those gauges are provided in the cluster stock...but the stock gauges are terrible! I can barely read them. I like my real analog gauges, the way clusters are supposed to be designed! I also was able to get all of my gauges in metric units which I much prefer. The gauges are made by Speedhut.com and they offer a wide range of customization options. I was able to setup the gauges to pretty closely reflect the appearance of the stock gauges. I hope this inspires you to improve your truck!
