During his state of the nation address, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa announced that he will deploy the army to the country’s two largest economic hubs, Cape Town and Johannesburg. This is not the first time the army has stepped in to counter the country’s endemic violent crime. The troops will assist the police in tackling soaring gang violence, as well as illegal mining activities. According to the World Bank, violent crime is draining about 10 percent from South Africa’s economy. Will deploying the army help Pretoria bring an end to instability, or is this a short-term solution to a deep-seated problem?
