We are back at Rock Island Auction Co. with Brownells Gun Techs™ and devoted students of firearms history, Keith and Steve, to check out one of the XM9 pistol prototypes submitted by Smith & Wesson for evaluation under the Joint Service Small Arms Program. Launched in 1977 to find a replacement for the Colt M1911A1, the JSSAP sought a double action service pistol chambered in 9mm Parabellum (9mm Luger or 9x19mm) with a double stack magazine that held 15 rounds. The winner would be adopted as the standard-issue sidearm for ALL branches of the U.S. military - a lucrative contract for its manufacturer! Colt, Fabrique National (FN), Heckler & Koch, SIG Sauer, Steyr, Walther, Smith & Wesson, and others submitted prototypes to the trials. To call S&W's XM9 a prototype is a bit of an overstatement, as it was basically a slightly upgraded Model 59, eventually released for the commercial market as the Model 459. Like the 459, the XM9 offered a double action first shot, followed by single action shots until you ran out of ammo or hit the decocker. Despite vociferous protests from Smith & Wesson afterwards, the Beretta M92 eventually won and was adopted as the M9 in 1985. Rock Island's XM9 shows cosmetic signs of being worked hard in the trials, and that only adds to its value as a relic of late 20th Century firearms history.
