Join Katie Doelle as she discusses the “grand estates” of Grosse Pointe, Michigan in this final lecture of the 2020-2021 Bicknell Lecture Series season. During the early 20th century, the Grosse Pointes transitioned from a summer retreat, for wealthy Detroit families, to a year-round home for prominent professionals, many of whom hired the finest architects and built grand mansions. By the 1930s, massive Georgian and Tudor residences were commonplace, and the Grosse Pointes were a thriving community awash with renowned families, natural beauty, historical architecture, and grand estates. Katie Doelle is the author of “Grand Estates of Grosse Pointe,” published in 2020 by Arcadia Publishing. She is a writer and graphic designer, and owns her own design business, Honest Opinion Design. She has written over 300 historical architecture blog entries for local realtor Higbie Maxon Agney. His daughter and son-in-law established the Grosse Pointe Historical Society's Bicknell Fund to mark his milestone birthday. This fund established the Dr. Frank Bicknell Lecture Series; all Bicknell Lectures are free of charge and open to everyone.
