UPDATE: The park sold a week after filming this awesome location. After last years storm Ida destroyed most of the buildings they are not salvageable. There are no immediate plans for the property but will be cleaning up the property . Some of you remember Lenape Park, an amusement park in Pa. from your childhood. The park , complete with a wooden roller coaster, beautiful merry go round with carved wooden animals, bumper cars, boat swings , fun house , and a pool, was a staple in family entertainment from the turn of the 20th century. In the early days (c. 1890), the park existed mainly as a picnic area, swimming hole, fishing area, and dance hall . Later added (c,1900 were an open air pavilion , rifle range, penny arcade, and shuffleboard. Around 1928, the park's then manager , John v. Gibney transformed the area from a small picnic park to a true amusement park , including the carousel , fun house, and roller coaster. Once accessible mainly by streetcar, the rails were removed in 1929 and Mr. Gibney created a grand entrance to the park on the northside of the Brandywine River. He constructed the swimming pool the same year. Lenape Park was a primary source of entertainment in the area between the years of 1930 and 1965, especially during the deprecation years and World War 2. Many families and companies would host picnics at the park- up to 20 per day ! Sadly , in the late 1960's the park began to fall behind financially due to rising insurance costs and the other local competing parks. In 1976 , Mr. Gibney sold the beloved park to a businessman named Calvin Jacobs , who changed the name to main Line Park. He was unsuccessful in turning a profit and then , in need of money, sold the wooden carousel animals piece by piece to antique dealers. He then quietly put the park up for sale. In 1985 all the rides were demolished , the pool filled in and the beautiful, fun, old-time amusement park was officially gone forever. The park is now known as Brandywine Picnic Park but was closed in 2021 and put up for sale but yet again was flooded out while for sale.
