Become a Defensive Stalwart Part 1 - Keep it Simple By Tyler Hinds (@THinds3) It’s every kids dream to be able to make flashy plays like PK or Drew. The unfortunate reality is that type of talent is incredibly rare. Five out of six defensemen on any NHL team are simply good, steady, reliable, puck moving D. They are able to make a career out of doing the little things right. Here are a few rules that they swear by… The First Pass A great principle to go by is less is more. A crisp first pass out of the zone is, in fact, more effective than skating the puck out your zone. You conserve energy, your forwards attack together, and, most importantly, the puck is further away from your own net. Here are four breakout options that will help get you out of your zone faster: the quick-up, the wheel, the D-to-D, & the reverse. Under-Handling the Puck When it comes to D puck handling, less is definitely more. Being the last line of defense apart from the goalie, we need to make calculated plays every time we touch the puck to avoid unwanted risk. This can be done by eliminating unnecessary stick handles (dusting it off) and focusing on the fundamentals of dragging or under-handling the puck when you’re… Back-pedaling Walking the blue line Rounding your net 200 Feet The best defense is a good offense. The faster you move the puck up the ice and into the hands of your forwards, the less time you will spend in your own zone. It is very difficult for the other team to score when they are pinned in their own zone 200 feet away from your goal. Part of your responsibility is to always keep the puck moving North.
