Dr. Viktoria Basham, a Lecturer in the Clarke Honors College at Salisbury University and a 2024–25 U.S. Fulbright Scholar, returns to Bulgaria to pursue a combined teaching–research project on folklore and vampire studies. Drawing on her background in Slavic demonology, she teaches courses and public lectures at ULSIT while conducting archival research at the Institute of Folklore at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. Her work explores regional representations of the Bulgarian folkloric vampire and will culminate in a digital, bilingual interactive map of vampire-related sources across the country. In this video, she reflects on rediscovering Bulgaria after nearly two decades abroad, the professional excitement of preserving cultural stories, and the personal meaning of reconnecting with her homeland. She also shares advice for future Fulbright applicants, encouraging them to embrace both the process and the unique opportunities that a grant in Bulgaria offers. 00:00 What motivated you to pursue your Fulbright project in Bulgaria? 01:16 Please tell us more about your Fulbright project. 05:00 Have any of your research findings revealed anything unexpected about vampires? 07:19 What has been the most rewarding aspect of your Fulbright journey so far? 09:38 What longer term effect do you expect the program to have on your professional life? 10:55 What advice would you give to other scholars interested in applying for a Fulbright in Bulgaria?
