I absolutely fell in love with the color and weight of this velvet fabric, but the original design wasn't quite my style. In today’s video, I’m showing you how I completely transformed this dress by removing the collar and sleeves and adding a stunning lace trim to create a fresh, elevated look. Working with velvet is a labor of love, but it requires a careful hand! Here are my top tips for anyone looking to try this at home: • The "One-Way" Rule: Velvet is very unforgiving. Once you sew a seam, the needle leaves permanent "tracks" or holes in the pile. Plan your placement carefully and pin within the seam allowance—you usually can’t undo a mistake without leaving a visible mark! • Handle with Care (Sewing): Use a walking foot if you have one to prevent the fabric layers from shifting, and always sew in the direction of the "nap" (the way the fuzz feels smooth). • The Steaming Secret: Never press your iron directly onto the face of the velvet, or you’ll crush the pile and leave a shiny "iron mark." Instead, use a steamer or hold your iron slightly above the fabric and use plenty of steam to release wrinkles. • The Transformation: By stripping away the bulky sleeves and collar, I’ve let the lace frame the bodice, giving the dress a more modern, delicate silhouette. Don't toss a dress you love the fabric of—reimagine it! ---
