THE MUSIC: Berlioz captured Hero's character well in the aria "Je vais le voir" conjuring the elegance and optimism of Mozart in the music, with flashes of exuberance. The aria culminates in a ladylike virtuosity, and a written cadenza that is one of the longest in the genre -- and this is where Albanian lyric-coloratura soprano Inva Mula shines best. THE SONGBIRD: Inva Mula was born in 1963 to parents who were both opera singers. She won several voice competitions in the early 1990s, which launched her into a career as something of a specialist in florid French opera including Manon, Mireille, Faust, Thais, the heroines in "Hoffmann," and Marie in Bizet's "Ivan IV" among others. Millions of science fiction cinema fans know her as the high soprano voice of the alien diva "Plavalaguna" in Luc Besson's 1997 film "The Fifth Element." I recorded this from webcast of a concert performance of Berlioz's full opera in Paris in March 2003, with John Nelson conducting.
