After focussing on rendering techniques, we now focus on the interactive exploration that is essential for diagnostic and treatment planning tasks. We discuss widely used interactions with slice-based visualizations, e.g. to adjust brightness and contrast to better reveal subtle details that may indicate a disease at an early stage. We go on and discuss transfer function specification. Image galleries, stochastic processes to explore the parameter space, and predefined transfer functions for efficient use are essential concepts. We go beyond 1D transfer functions and also consider gradient-based and curvature-based transfer functions. A particular challenge is the visualization of MRI data since it exhibits inhomogeneity. We discuss one approach to reusing a transfer function defined for one MRI dataset for similar datasets with the same diagnostic question.
