How To Make Your EDM Synths Sound Pro (Logic Pro X) - - I know it can be ultra frustrating to work on your EDM chops with nothing but boring stock sounds... It almost seems unfair when you start comparing your tracks to your favourite artists. Rest assured, I have the secret Logic Pro saaaawwwce for y'all! The secret of pretty much ALL EDM producers: post-processing. But... what is it!? Post-processing is a set of techniques used to shape synth sounds working with effect plugins chained in a strategic order. //Distorsion & overdrive Works great on leads! Good to add a bit of bite to your basses as well. Dodgier on polysynths as the harmonics start to pile up fast depending on the richness of said chords. //EQ Always emphasize the "musical" frequencies in your sounds, or a characteristic such as grain (high frequencies). Always cut frequencies occupied by a more strategic sound (low frequencies for bass sounds, duh). //Delay & reverb Once the sound has bite and has been shaped to your liking, it's time to add movement and size. Always try to EQ out frequencies that might clutter your mix. //Sidechain Compression If you want your EDM tracks to bang, GO HARD here. Play around with your main compressor settings as well to bring out grain and character in your sounds (given that your are slamming these tracks). //Limiter With EDM, limiting individual is not a SIN. It's even encouraged. Want that lead to screech and tear da roof off? Slam it. Want that bass present and thump? Slam it. But please: do it with taste. There is such a thing as "too much". //OTT (Over The Top) This multi band compressor setting was made popular, or dare i say "famous" by Xfer and then Ableton. You basically slam every 3 or 4 frequency bands and use the band volume to somewhat "EQ" your track. Fantastic to make any sound "present" in your mix. So... that's it folks !!
