She always said the sea looked softer under a full moon, like it was finally telling the truth about how lonely it really was. That night she stood there in her black dress, bare arms catching the cold light, watching the path of silver stretch out across the water to some place I would never see. We had walked for a long time without touching, our footsteps side by side but out of rhythm, both of us pretending that the sound of the waves was enough to fill the spaces where our words used to live. When she stopped and faced the horizon, it felt less like a pause and more like a decision, the kind you make quietly so the other person cannot talk you out of it. Now this is the version of her that lives in my head: still, calm, lit by moonlight instead of anger, the wind tugging at her hair while she pretends not to feel it. I look at this image and think of all the things I should have said when I still had the chance, before the tide came in and carried her reflection away, leaving only the echo of her silhouette on the dark sand beside me.
