Hundreds of thousands of Queenslanders were plunged into darkness on Tuesday during a major blackout which saw many traffic lights go offline and the Brisbane International Airport blacked out for 15 minutes. The Gold Coast University Hospital was also blacked out for up to 10 minutes before emergency generators kicked in. The major outage was sourced to a fire at the coal fired Callide power station near Biloela which broke out in a turbine hall just before 2pm on Tuesday. Most affected residents had their power restored within hours after the incident. Federal Energy Minister Angus Taylor said “we’re working to investigate the impact on customers in regional Queensland, of course emergency events like these are matters we take very seriously.” The Australian Energy Market Operator launched an investigation into the cause of the fire.
