The MeerKAT radio telescope is an extremely sensitive radio array located in the Karoo in the Northern Cape. It is one of the premier radio telescopes in the world and since it began operating in 2018 it has contributed to significant discoveries about our universe and will continue to do so for many years to come. It is a precursor instrument to the even more ambitious SKA telescope currently under construction and planned to come online in 2028. In this talk I will explore some details of these two instruments and the features that make them uniquely powerful and suited to the task of understanding star-formation and black-hole activity in our universe.I will explain the processes that allow radio emission to trace star-formation and black hole activity and delve into the pros and cons of using radio versus other wavelengths for this purpose. Finally I will discuss some of the key science questions about the relationship between galaxies and black holes that these instruments hope to address.
