That might be about to change thanks to Aava, a seasoned climber who has told her family she’s off to climb the unclimbable. She has a goal, a task she must complete, and nothing, not even the mountain that has claimed the lives of over 150 other climbers, will stop her. On its surface, the story is simple. It’s about a woman climbing a mountain and meeting a few people along the way. Dig a little deeper, and it’s about compulsion. Some people must complete a task they’ve set their mind to, even if it means hurting themselves and others around them. Because of this, Aava is a complex character. I must admit, I do not like her, but not because she’s written poorly. Quite the opposite. I understand her motives, I see how her compulsion drives her forward, but she’s forsaken family to try and do something that could very easily result in her death. She’s selfish, but she’s also broken. I wanted her to succeed and I wanted her to stop. Cairn’s narrative does an excellent job at holding up a mirror to the player. It shows us someone who is driven, asks us what our own summit is, and then forces us to reconcile the fact that we might hurt people to achieve it. This one’s going to sit with me for a while.
