In the last episode I made some shelves out of Nidacore honeycomb core. I put thick 1708 biaxial glasscloth on the underside of each shelf because that side will be under tension when the shelf is loaded with weight on top of it. The tops of each shelf is covered with chopped strand mat. I only closed off the front edge of each shelf where it would show. This time, I roll a few coats of gelcoat on each shelf before gluing it in place in the locker. Then I form a radius on every inside corner where shelf meets wall using fairing compound. After that, I can add fiberglass tabbing to give the glue a lot of surface area to bond each shelf to the inner walls of the locker. This holds the shelves in place, and also makes the sides of the locker resist bending forces. Because I was planning to glass the shelves to the walls, I was able to make the walls a lot lighter by covering them with 4 ounce surfboard cloth instead of using 1708 there. With the shelves installed, I roll a final layer of gelcoat with the wax additive. This final layer will actually harden completely because the wax floats to the surface and cuts the resin off from the air. Gelcoat is based on polyester resin, which is a laminating resin that doesn't fully harden when exposed to air. This lets you continue adding layers to your laminate without sanding between every layer. Even after letting it sit overnight, you can just wipe it down with acetone and it becomes tacky again, allowing a chemical bond to the additional layers. This is a much stronger bond than you get between layers of epoxy that is sanded to make a lock and key bond between layers. The upper back part of the locker was finished this time. It becomes the new back to the sofa on the flybridge. There is a big cushion that will go there so I can lean back on something soft.
