You are not allowed to edit your film photos! You have to keep it real! Why not just shoot black and white in the first place? Because we’re talking about art. And in art, there are no rules. Do whatever you want with it. Or, to put it politely: just ask yourself, what if…? For me at least, it’s a worthy experiment. Every digital photographer converts their images from a colored RAW file into a black-and-white interpretation—so why not do the same with film? Sure, there are digital black-and-white sensors out there, but… can you afford one? ;) So I assume that about 98 percent of black-and-white images actually start as color, right? I often find myself in situations where I’ve loaded a color film but stumble upon a scene that really begs to be shot in black and white. Should I not take the shot? Should I waste half of an expensive medium-format color roll just to insert a black-and-white one for a single frame I might not even like later at home? Why am I even overthinking this? Every one of my photographs ends up in digital form on my computer anyway. I have all the editing options right there. But honestly, I’m just curious :D I just wanted to know what the difference really is. And of course, it depends on the film stock, the scene, the scanner, and the edit. Still, I find it very interesting to compare these two 400 ISO films side by side like this. As always: draw your own conclusions. :) I make these tests and videos for myself anyway — but I hope you got something out of it too! Thanks for watching!
