The sixth episode of Samvidhaan: Whose Land Is It?: Land Reforms and Acquisition - was screened in Dhwani Legal Trust. Samvidhaan is the acclaimed ten-part docudrama directed by Shyam Benegal and produced by Rajya Sabha Television. This episode explores the constitutional vision and political struggles around land ownership, land reforms, and state-led land acquisition in India. the episode traces how land, as a source of livelihood, dignity and power has been central to questions of social justice, redistribution and development, while also being a site of conflict between communities and the state. This was followed by in-depth discussion with Professor Babu Mathew, who critically examined the constitutional promises of land reforms, the dilution of protective laws and the impact of acquisition policies on farmers, adivasis and marginalised communities. The discussion raised important questions on development versus displacemet, consent, compensation and the role of constitutional morality in resolving land-related conflicts in contemporary India. The evening ended with deep thought provoking as to how these reforms continue to influence the democratic life of the marginalised communities in India today.
