Many Muslims are unaware of the beautiful Sunnah of Tahneek for newborn babies. In this video, we explain what Tahneek is, how it is performed, and the authentic practice of the Prophet ﷺ regarding newborn children. Tahneek means placing a softened date in the mouth of a newborn and gently rubbing it on the upper palate. This was a practice of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ when companions would bring their newborn babies to him. He would perform Tahneek and make du‘a for blessings for the child. This Sunnah reminds us of the importance of starting a child’s life with barakah and connection to the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ.
