Originally a swamp, the area was developed into a military base serving the British artillery battalion in the Far East in the 1930s. However, the base was unable to withstand the Japanese invasion, thus leading to its eventual demise. After the fall of Singapore, many local Chinese tragically died in the Japanese military's Sook Ching operation and Changi beach was one of the killing grounds. British prisoners of war also suffered humiliation at their barracks during the Japanese occupation. After the war, the British returned and brought another round of prosperity to the small businessmen in Changi Village.
